Livestock and Equine Awareness and Rescue Network- A non-profit group committed to the well being of livestock and equines in the southeastern United States.
LEARN (Livestock & Equine Awareness and Rescue Network) has rescued needy horses and livestock for the last twenty years. We know that times are tough but we are unable to continue helping the amount of horses we do without more funding. When a horse is rescued, there is an expensive feeding schedule that needs to be followed so that their digestive tract is not compromised. The horses must have their hooves worked on, and a veterinarian treats all horses. LEARN gladly rescues any horse that needs it, yet the cost is enormous.
LEARN continues to get rescue horses in to treat, rehabilitate, and then adopt out to “forever” homes. LEARN currently has nine horses that were rescued and are being fed, cared for by a farrier and veterinarian, and we are scheduled to receive three more in the next few days.
Some of the recent horses taken in are three very sweet animals who were being fed a diet of chicken scratch. Their water trough was full of a thick green sludge instead of water. Included in this article are some pictures of the most recent rescued horses, and they are extremely sweet souls who crave attention. One of these had a matted tail and could not move her tail to swat the gnats. We had to cut the club-like mess out so she could move her tail.
LEARN is dependent on funds and supplies donated by generous people to continue feeding and caring for these horses. Any monetary donations need to be sent to LEARN at PO Box 619, Ravenel, SC 29470. The main supplies we need besides money are feed and Senior feed from Tractor Supply or Red Top Feed store, fly spray, and wormer.
A Potts Longhorn western saddle is being raffled off to donators. The saddle is in great shape and has a 16 inch seat with a full Quarter Horse bar. It was purchased new in 1987 for $1200. Please write your name and phone number on any donation, whether it be monetary or supply. LEARN greatly thanks you for your donation in advance.

47 horses seized May 6, 2009, in Colleton County, SC. They were on one farm, some tied to trees with short ropes and chains, most with no water, and in varying stages of malnutrition/starvation. These horses were infested with internal parasites, their belly's full of sand, many covered in lice and untreated injuries. One stallion had his eye burst out by the owner when he was beaten with the metal end of a water hose. The stallion received no medical treatment and the eye has atrophied in the socket. This information was given to me by the owner in a matter of fact, emotionless statement. I cannot adequately express in words the horror these animals lived in, including 15 dogs, 9 kittens, and a rooster.
At first, LEARN had 33 of these horses living in large pastures of grass, eating top quality hay and feed, and enjoying fresh, clean water. They were transforming from dull, lethargic, wounded souls to spirited, healthy horses with the look of eagles in their majestic eyes. We were often moved to tears watching them flourish.
All but 12 are now being cared for by Colleton County Animal Control. LEARN has complete control of the rest of the horses, many of whom were the most emaciated and sick. One beautiful mare lived happily for six months but was so parasite infested that she could not recover and passed away. Thank God she was the only mare we lost. All the horses had to be given several rounds of worming. They were fed high-quality hay and nutritious feed according to individual cases and needs. The vet and farrier were constantly overseeing the horses care.
They flourished in this loving, caring environment and are all cleared by the vet and fat and happy. We have adopted 5 of these and need forever homes for the rest.
As the pictures show, they are definitely ready for adoption but still need the patience and love to establish trust with humans again.
For further information you can see us at LEARN on Facebook and a website is coming soon.
The founder of LEARN is Elizabeth Steed. If you have any questions about the adoptees you can call Elizabeth at 843-991-8479 or Laurie at 843-324-4398. For donations please send to LEARN at PO Box 619, Ravenel SC 29470.

Introducing Shaker, a beautiful stallion with a very sweet soul. He was the victim of cruelty and abuse by his former owner. He was starved and beaten with a hose until his left eye sustained permanent damage and without a vet's help, the eye atrophied in the socket. Luckily, Shaker was rescued by LEARN, an equine rescue organization headed by Elizabeth Steed. He put on a lot of weight and now looks and feels great except for the damaged eye which is unsightly and drains constantly.
In order for Shaker to be forever adopted, he needs to be gelded and have his eye socket repaired. He will never be able to see out of the eye again but surgery will remove the atrophied eye for a cleaner, healthier appearance. He has been ridden successfully and is quite the gentleman.
The LEARN non-profit organization has been quoted a fee of $1200 and we are halfway there from generous donations. Please help Shaker find a forever home by donating whatever you can. If everyone who reads this donates just five dollars, we would have the remaining $600 in no time.
You can look up LEARN on Facebook or call myself, Laurie Tisdale (843-324-4398) or Elizabeth Steed (843-991-4879). We are also on Facebook with our phone numbers and email addresses if you have any questions.
Please send your donations to LEARN, PO BOX 619, Ravenel, SC 29470.
